STUDY AIDS - WRITTEN PROFICIENCY TESTS

 

The Maersk written proficiency tests are based upon the final exam for the course of the same subject.  The following links provide either a study guide or the course outline for each subject.  Students wanting to successfully pass these proficiency tests need to be knowledgeable in all of the topics covered in the document provided.

STUDY AIDS - PRACTICAL PROFICIENCY TESTS

 

MACHINE SHOP

Test applicant must be able to perform the following operations successfully to pass the proficiency test. Acceptance criteria will be based upon the blue print and associated tolerances that are given to the test applicant prior to the test. Lathe familiarization will be given by the course instructor prior to the test. All standard safety practices must be followed during the test. Very minimal corrective guidance will be given by Instructors due to the nature of the “Proficiency” test. The operations that must be performed are:

  • Indicating a 4 jaw chuck
  • Grinding of lathe Turning, facing & Threading tools
  • Turning
  • Facing
  • Thread turning
  • Taper Turning
  • Groove cutting

WELDING

Test applicant must be able to perform the following operations successfully to pass the proficiency test. Acceptance criteria will be based upon the American Welding Society D1.1 Structural Steel Welding Code. Welding equipment familiarization will be given by the course instructor prior to the test. All standard safety practices must be followed during the test. Very minimal corrective guidance will be given by Instructors due to the nature of the “Proficiency” test. The test consists of completing a 1G (flat Groove weld) with an open root. The weld must have complete joint penetration welded from one side and pass visual inspection by instructor. After successful completion of the visual examination the weld coupon will be prepped by the test applicant and bend tested as per AWS D1.1 Welding Code. Visual inspection of the bend samples will determine the successful or unacceptable completion of the test. Following are the tasks that must be performed during the test:

  • Welding with E6010 (Root)
  • Welding with E7018 (Fill & Cap passes)
  • Welds must be run as Stringer beads
  • Oxy-Fuel torch cutting
  • Grinding & sanding
